Specialization (Ernest Boyer)

1.) Boyer really goes in deep with the idea that liberal arts have been and will be important in our university system, but also that more employers are looking for them. To support this idea, Ernest Boyer an American educator who most notably served as Chancellor of the State University of New York, United States Commissioner of Education, and President of the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching had this to say. “For years, specialization has been the watchword for employers, too…business and engineering majors are often chosen first(219).” What Boyer is saying, is that experience and a sense of “creativity” is a key sign for employers to higher people more.

2.) Boyers idea of “enriched major” goes like this, “…encourages students to not only explore a a field in depth, but also to help them put their field of special study in perspective(110).” I think that Boyer’s idea of an enriched major is sound, because we need to make our own self discovery and find out why our majors are so important to us. However, with that being said, the beginning is never easy. Boyer also had this interesting tidbit to say on the matter, “…the largest percentage chose “arts and humanities(218).” Basically more and more people are picking interesting/creative fields to go into. In turn this will help you get hired in the workforce.
